Why Raw?

"Why raw" is a very common and natural question asked by owners regarding converting their dogs or cats to a natural raw food biologically appropriate diet.

Dogs are carnivores, and could also be considered "non-obligated" carnivores meaning in short that they can "get by" on whatever they can consume for the most part. But is "getting by" enough? Humans could "get by" from consuming a staple of solely fast food, but does that mean we should be? Does it mean we'll be healthy by doing so?

A biologically appropriate natural raw food diet provides all the necessary components to help our canine and feline friends to return to a healthier lifestyle. And thanks to a wide range of raw food options available, a natural diet is readily accessible and presented in  convenient fashion suitable to today's fast paced lifestyles.

So what is it exactly? Tripe is the stomach organ found in ruminant animals – basically those that graze on vegetation and require multiple stomachs to break down and digest their food.  Sheep, cattle, venison, bison, would be considered ruminants.  In a cow, the most readily available type of tripe here in Ontario, there are four separate stomach compartments or chambers (the rumen, reticulum, omasum, and the abomasum) each of which play a particular role in their digestion of foods.

So now that we know what just what green tripe is, and where it comes from, what are the benefits to this stinky substance?  From some of the reports, you’d think that tripe was over exaggerated as the wonder-food-cure-all-miracle-substance, however, there is an overwhelming consensus from breeders and owners that some of tripe’s benefits include:  general over-all health improvement, reduced skin problems, shinier coats, better teeth, stronger muscles, better digestion (including reduction of digestive disorders), older dogs invigorated, younger dogs with exceptional development, and many other overall improvements.  Green tripe definitely helps with the fussiest of eaters, including pregnant bitches who may be “off” their normal foods.

What makes green tripe so good?  Well, there are a few notable items.  First, tripe has a calcium-phosphorus ratio of 1:1, which is great for dogs.  It has a relatively low fat content, along with good amounts of essential fatty acids.    Potassium, vitamins, magnesium, are all components to tripe and beneficial to our furry friends.  And beyond the chemical compositions of tripe, the food contains good amounts of lactobacillus acidophilus which we’re likely all aware of thanks to yogurt commercials as being a pro-biotic and aides in digestion.

Transitioning to Raw Food

It is best to introduce raw food slowly into your companion’s diet over the course of two weeks.  If your companion is used to having food available throughout the day, first transition him or her to eating only once or twice per day for dogs, and two to three times per day for cats before beginning the transition to raw food.  Consider transitioning fully to raw in the beginning even if you ultimately intend to feed a mix of raw and cooked or dry.  This will give your companion’s digestive system the optimal environment for generating healthy enzymes and flora. Start with 1 teaspoon for small dogs and cats and 1 tablespoon for larger dogs for three days or so.  Then increase to 2 teaspoons or tablespoons for several days, decreasing the amount of regular food by ¼ to ½ in general proportion to the raw.  Work up to replacing at least ½ the normal diet for several days.  Finally replace one full meal with raw for a day or two, then fully transition to raw.

We recommend supplementing with digestive enzymes (see dogs and cats) and probiotics (see dogs and cats) for at least the first two weeks to help your companion’s natural digestive processes kick back in after eating cooked foods for so long.  If your animal is resistant to the raw at first, you may want to use a bit of canned food to entice them.  Cats, in particular, can be resistant to a change in diet.  They tend to fixate on whatever food they are weaned onto and will resist switching to a healthier diet.  We have found that grinding or shredding their favorite treat on top of the food can help.  Cats will most likely take some persistence on your part, but it is well worth it for the health of your companion.

Myth: RAW MEAT DIETS ARE NOT BALANCED.

Yes, all-meat diets are NOT balanced. You cannot feed a diet of just meat to your dog and expect it to do well. Your dog needs bones and organ meat as well to obtain the proper nutrients. This means feeding a prey-model diet based on a whole prey animal. Remember that your dog has no needs for vegetables, and that most of the nutrients in vegetables—even pre-processed ones—are unavailable to your dog.  The alternative? Feed according to the prey model and provide variety. If you are feeding whole animals or a variety of raw meaty bones and organ meats, then your diet will be balanced. Raw foods contain the exact proportions of fat, protein, vitamins, minerals, and enzymes a dog needs.

One other concept of balance that should be addressed is the idea perpetuated by the pet food companies: "Dogs need complete and balanced nutrition in every meal."   This is not how the canine body—or any other body—operates! Take your own diet, for example. Do you eat a complete and balanced meal every time you eat? No! You eat a variety of foods over a period of time, and yet your body generally does very well and exhibits no signs of nutritional deficiencies. Dogs do not need "complete and balanced" nutrition at every meal. If they did, then any time they did not receive complete and balanced nutrition their bodies would get out of skew and problems would suddenly develop. This is not how it works. This is where one sees the concept of "balance over time" developing. This is the principle that many feel is adequate to explain how all living things obtain the proper nutrition. Nutritional needs are met over a period of time, and balance is achieved through time as the animal eats what it needs at the time it needs it or whenever it can get it. The nutrients the body MUST have and cannot synthesize for itself are supplied in sufficient amounts in the food the animal eats. Nutrients are stored within the body when they are eaten and are not needed, but when the need arises, they are essentially pulled out of storage and used. This is what allows animals (and people!) to fast for sufficient periods of time without starving or dying. They not only have fat reserves and protein reserves in their muscles, but stored up nutrients and vitamins in their tissues (fat soluble vitamins, for example, like A, D, and K).

Myth: THE BACTERIA IN RAW MEAT WILL HURT YOUR DOG.

Yes, the bacteria in raw meat might hurt your dog IF the dog already has an immuno-compromised system or some underlying problem. Raw diets have also been blamed for causing things like pancreatitis and kidney disease, when in reality the underlying disease was already there and was brought to light by the change in diet. Dogs are surprisingly well-equipped to deal with bacteria. Their saliva has antibacterial properties; it contains lysozyme, an enzyme that lyses and destroys harmful bacteria. Their short digestive tract is designed to push through food and bacteria quickly without giving bacteria time to colonize. The extremely acidic environment in the gut is also a good bacteria colonization deterrent. People often point to the fact that dogs shed salmonella in their feces (even kibble-fed dogs do this) without showing any ill effects as proof that the dog is infected with salmonella. In reality, all this proves is that the dog has effectively passed the salmonella through its system with no problems. Yes, the dog can act as a salmonella carrier, but the solution is simple--wash your hands after picking up after your dog.  The fear of feeding raw meat in this country seems to stem from a fear of salmonella, e. coli and parasites.  In over 10 years of feeding raw food and seeing countless animals on raw food diets, salmonella and e. coli have not been seen to be a problem.  (Remember, their digestive systems are designed to accommodate raw meat.)  Parasites could be contracted through eating wild, whole prey or game meats, but is much less likely from properly handled human grade meats.  Infection is more likely to occur through ingestion of feces or soil, or poorly handled meat.
